Poor Vision or Blindness, Speech, Decreased Hearing or Deaf Impairments or Dizziness (Vertigo) that may Qualify for Social Security Disability

This list of conditions which may qualify one to receive Social Security disability benefits is not intended to be authoritarian in nature and is provided only for your information. This information may not be the latest rulings provided by the SSA. Detailed information can be obtained from the Social Security Administration's website where this information was obtained. The Social Security Administration recognizes statutory blindness of less than  20/200 in the best eye with corrective lenses or an eye impairment that causes your field of vision to be less than 20 degrees in the granting of Social Security disability benefits for blindness. If you do not fit this threshold, a combination of vision problems and other physical problems may still make you eligible to receive disability benefits even if you do not meet the vision threshold.

Hearing

If you have a hearing disability the Social Security Administration may desire that you have a cochlear implant. They may also provide disability benefits for twelve months after the implant is placed. After twelve months the SSA may continue providing disability benefits with the submission of additional testing showing that you are still having significant hearing problems.

Hearing disability is determined by both the auditory level at which you can hear as well as the level at which you can discern words being spoken. Usually testing results performed by a qualified otolaryngologist or audiologist are required to be submitted with your claim.

Dizziness (Vertigo)

Dizziness, or vertigo, may be caused by many diseases or problems. Many times dizziness clears up on its own or is controlled by medications.

One of the keys for obtaining Social Security disability benefits for vertigo is to document extensively the length of time you have had the problem and the seriousness of the disability. Your doctor's notes are extremely important for this documentation. In addition the SSA may request results of any testing such as CT scans, MRIs or X-rays of the brain, skull and / or temporal bone.

Speech Impairments

Speech disorders stem from a wide range of problems. They may be caused by birth defects, injuries, illness or neurological impairments. When determining eligibility for Social Security disability benefits for speech related deficits, the SSA will want to know if an electronic or other assistive device will enable you to overcome your impediment well enough to work a job adequately.

Because eligibility of a speech impediment may be difficult to determine for disability benefits the SSA may look to see if you are having difficulty in other areas or body functions and determine that a combination of problems is sufficient to qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

Summary

Hearing, visual, speech and dizziness problems may be difficult to conclude accurately to determine if you are eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. Some criteria may be subjective. Contact the Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers today for assistance in determining the possibility of your eligibility for Social Security disability benefits.
